In a deliberately simplified analogy, our bodies are continuously inspecting for potential defects. Phagocytes find pathogens. Antigens provide the notification. Lymphocytes organize a response. Antibodies do the work required to keep a potential problem from becoming a full functional failure.
The most impressive part is not the first response. It is the learning that remains afterward.
Maintenance translation
- Inspection: search for abnormal conditions.
- Potential defect: identify a pathogen or failure mode.
- Notification: convert the signal into actionable information.
- Planning and response: organize the right resources and intervention.
- Learning: improve the next response using evidence from the last one.
A spectrum of maintenance strategies
Run to Failure (RTF)
Repair the asset after it fails. This is appropriate when analysis shows that planned maintenance would cost more than the risk and consequence of failure.
Preventive Maintenance (PM)
Replace, clean, or repair a component at a predetermined interval—for example, replacing an oil filter once a year.
Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM)
Intervene based on the asset's current observed condition. A vibration reading above an agreed limit may trigger pump alignment.
Predictive Maintenance (PdM) and PHM
Use measurement trends or sensor history to anticipate when an intervention will be needed. The rate and context of change become as important as the current reading.
Prescriptive Maintenance (RxM)
Analyze multiple equipment and process variables together to anticipate an outcome and recommend the appropriate action.
Which strategy looks most like immunity?
Prescriptive maintenance comes closest because the response considers more than the pathogen—or failure signal—alone. It interprets several parameters, connects them to historical experience, and adapts as the system learns from previous struggles.
It sounds like artificial intelligence. In our bodies, it is real intelligence.
No strategy is automatically superior. Each has its own economics, limitations, data requirements, and operating conditions. The important decision is choosing the strategy that fits the failure mode and the consequence.
Choose with risk and cost—not fashion
A practical selection process combines FMEA and RCM with risk and cost evaluation. Start with required functions and credible failure modes. Understand consequence and detectability. Then decide whether the right response is run-to-failure, a time-based task, inspection, continuous monitoring, a predictive model, or redesign.
The strongest maintenance system does not use one strategy everywhere. Like the immune system, it uses different responses for different threats—and it keeps learning.
